I feel dry and uncomfortable in menopause

Dryness, burning, itching or painful sex in menopause affect many women and rarely improve on their own. Talk to your gynaecologist, and find out how pelvic physiotherapy can complement treatment.

Common, but not normal

Your underwear feels uncomfortable. There is burning, itching, a dryness that will not go away. Sex has become painful and perhaps you have stopped altogether. You may also need the toilet more often or get urinary infections more frequently. And you think it is simply “age”.

These symptoms have a name — genitourinary syndrome of menopause — and they affect many women. Unlike hot flushes, which tend to ease over time, vaginal dryness usually persists or worsens if left untreated. It is common, but you do not have to live with it: there are effective medical treatments and care that can complement them.

What may be at the root

  • Falling oestrogen. Hormones keep the lining of the vagina and urethra thick, elastic and moist. In menopause the tissues become thinner, drier and more fragile.
  • Reduced pelvic circulation. Blood flow decreases and tissues receive less nourishment.
  • A tense pelvic floor. Repeated pain makes the muscles brace, increasing discomfort and pain during sex.
  • A weaker pelvic floor. This can also contribute to urgency and leakage.
  • Everyday habits. Harsh soaps, douching and tight synthetic clothing irritate skin that is already sensitive.

How we can help

The first step is to speak to your gynaecologist or GP: there are local treatments, hormonal and non-hormonal, that only a doctor can assess and prescribe. Our work complements that treatment.

In the consultation we take time to listen and assess — with your consent — the pelvic floor. Pelvic physiotherapy can help relax or strengthen the muscles, depending on what we find, improve circulation and tissue elasticity, and reduce pain during sex. Visceral osteopathy looks at the mobility of the pelvis and pelvic organs. Acupuncture may be a complement for other menopausal symptoms and general wellbeing.

What you can do now

  • A vaginal moisturiser used regularly, and a water-based lubricant during sex — fragrance-free.
  • Gentle hygiene. Water or a pH-appropriate product, on the outside only; avoid douching and scented wipes.
  • Keep your pelvis moving. Walking, calm breathing and gentle stretching help circulation in the pelvic area.

If this sounds like you, get in touch. Menopause is a stage of life — not the end of comfort.
